Heavy Metal Barbell Club is North Carolina's largest and most successful USA Weightlifting club, and a proud Virus® apparel partner. Founded in 2011 in Charlotte, this team-first Olympic weightlifting program has produced over 230 national and international medals, developed Team USA athletes, and is led by USAW Sport Performance Manager Sean Rigsby—one of the most accomplished coaches in American weightlifting today.
Why Virus® Partners with Heavy Metal Barbell
At Virus® International, we don't just sponsor gyms—we partner with programs that share our obsession with performance, technology, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Heavy Metal Barbell Club embodies everything we believe in: science-backed training methodology, a commitment to athlete development at every level, and the understanding that what you wear on the platform matters as much as how you train.
When Heavy Metal athletes step onto the competition platform, they're wearing Virus® compression and performance apparel engineered with the same precision they bring to every lift. Our Bioceramic™ technology supports their recovery between heavy sessions. Our 4-way stretch fabrics move with them through every snatch, clean, and jerk. This is the partnership of two organizations that refuse to compromise.

Meet Head Coach Sean Rigsby: From Platform to High Performance Leadership
Sean Rigsby isn't just a coach—he's a cornerstone of American weightlifting. In August 2025, USA Weightlifting elevated him to the full-time position of Sport Performance Manager, recognizing his exceptional contributions to athlete development at the highest levels.
Coach Rigsby's resume reads like a blueprint for coaching excellence:
With USA Weightlifting National Teams (2022-Present): Working alongside legendary coaches Jackie Black and Pyrros Dimas, Rigsby helped USA athletes earn 54 medals in the last four Junior World Championships and 11 medals in the last four Youth World Championships. He was instrumental in developing the recently-launched National Team Program and led the first NTP developmental camp at the Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
As an Athlete: Rigsby competed as a member of Team Muscle Driver USA (MDUSA), training alongside Olympic hopefuls and National Champions. He became National Champion of Ireland in multiple categories and represented the Republic of Ireland at World and European Championships. Three of his teammates were Team USA Olympians.
International Impact: He led the Jamaican Weightlifting Federation to its largest delegation and highest performances at a Commonwealth Games in its history. Alongside Travis Mash at Lenoir-Rhyne University, he helped student-athletes become back-to-back Collegiate National Champions.
Beyond the elite level, Rigsby has spent over a decade as a full-time coach working with athletes across all abilities—from NFL and MLB athletes to everyday parents pursuing longevity. His philosophy is simple: coaching is a professional undertaking that deserves the same dedication athletes bring to their training.
Training Programs: Something for Every Lifter
Heavy Metal Barbell operates out of Charlotte Strength, a premier 24-hour strength and conditioning facility in Charlotte, NC. Their programming structure reflects their commitment to meeting athletes wherever they are in their journey:

This isn't generic online programming—it's fully individualized coaching with intensive video feedback from coaches who understand high-performance weightlifting.
TrainHeroic Team Programs
Their 5x-week team program on TrainHeroic is designed by Coach Rigsby for athletes who want to compete and qualify for American Open Series events or USAW National Championships. Training sessions include warmups, primer drills, demo videos, and recovery work—all built around an Annual Plan that prepares you for competition.
Competition Events: Queen City Classic & Carolina Triple Crown
Heavy Metal doesn't just develop competitors—they create competition opportunities that elevate the entire Carolina weightlifting community.
The Queen City Classic is Charlotte's premier weightlifting event, now entering its 9th year in 2026. This USA Weightlifting sanctioned meet serves as a Nationals Week Qualifier for Youth, Junior, U25, and Senior athletes. With stage lighting, elevated production value, and a focus on athlete experience, it's become a destination event for lifters across the Southeast.
The Carolina Triple Crown is a three-event team competition series that Heavy Metal created in partnership with clubs across North Carolina. Teams of 2 male and 2 female athletes compete using the "Lou-Clair" scoring system—a variation of the Sinclair formula that levels the playing field for Novice, Intermediate, and Elite athletes. It's community building through competition.
The Science-Backed Approach
What truly differentiates Heavy Metal is their commitment to evidence-based training methodology:
Assessment & Onboarding: Every athlete—remote or on-site—goes through a structured assessment period. No cookie-cutter programs. No guessing.
Annual Plan Design: Every program is built around a periodized Annual Plan that aligns training stress with competition goals. This is how elite programs operate.
Proprietary Ratio Analysis: Heavy Metal has developed their own analytical process based on data from elite athletes. This means your programming is informed by what actually works at the highest levels of the sport.
Professional Coaching Staff: Their coaches are career professionals—not hobbyists who coach on the side. They're relationship-focused, communication-oriented, and dedicated to continued education. When you work with Heavy Metal, you're working with coaches who have chosen this as their life's work.
